A graduate of Sheridan College with a diploma in film production Jason Ebanks has since founded KHO. Under this moniker, Ebanks has exhibited his finesse, boasting
directorial credits for Carlos Morgan, Universal Soul, Fito Blanko and EMI Recording artist Shawn Hewitt Apart from also having participated in a number of Toronto film festivals, he has also channeled his creative vision towards fashion launches for clients such as adidas, Fashion Television, fashcam, The Artist Group and Wolves clothing. With work showcased in both independent and international festivals, he asserts the understanding that, “Toronto is very indie type of city. In TO there’s commercial then there’s art. They never really meet. However, I’d love to introduce them to each other they’d make a great couple!”
As a Jamaican-Canadian in a culturally and artistically diverse city as Toronto,
Ebanks has had the opportunity to dabble in urban and indie-rock music video
production. No longer pigeonholed into solely Hip Hop or R&B genres, intrepid
black artists can participate richly in alternative industries. Taking cues from
fellow directors Charles Officer and James Spooner, Ebanks is next
in line to change the face of art direction through raw and experimental
syntheses. He comments, “Being Canadian is a little bit of
a struggle, just because there’s not much of a market here; the big business
is in LA. But I’m grateful for the granting system Canada offers.”
Also citing Michel Gondry, Jonathan Glazer and Spike Jonez as inspirational role models, Ebanks has made little secret of his objective and ability to make the leap from music video to feature films. With his ability to illuminate great music through artistic depiction, Jason Ebanks is a fearless up and comer that brings charisma and trend-breaking to be synonymous.
